Hurricane Irene Aftermath

The Sweetleaf Cafe taunts Irene. They have great coffee too!

Power to the Caffeinated!

Since the eye of Hurricane Irene passed two miles from my home, I went out to photograph some destruction. But New York is a tough town and Irene was a Category 0 storm.

A direct challenge!

Aim Here.

Indestructibles

The Indestructibles!

NYC Taxis are urban assault tanks in disguise. If the city can't destroy them, a little hurricane won't.

My evac center down the street. It was quiet.

Pete's Diner & Grill.

Great food 24 / 7...even during a hurricane!

Smile!

Beer World survived!

Seriously, these guys have every kind of beer from around the world you can imagine.

"I can see clearly now the rain is gone..."  So the song goes.

Just a few hours after Irene the skies showed a little blue.

Then it turned really windy later in the afternoon.

Just in case Irene missed a spot or two.

Paper masking tape will prevent 50 mph debris from smashing the windows.

Even more paper tape will be stronger! Anyone want to test it? I'm just glad I'm not the one who has to peel it off.

Close up to show cheap tape and good taping job.

I admit the window taping captions are on the sarcastic side.

Also I admit that I thought about taping my own windows. I cannot lie on that one. I was going to use 2 inch wide professional cloth gaffer's tape but didn't want to peel it off.

Then I read on www.NYTimes.com that window taping is "a waste of time and tape" and felt better about not doing it.

5 Pointz Long Island City, NY

We did. Thanks for saving us from the storm!

The 5 Pointz complex in Long Island City. It wears its art on the outside. Really!

The name comes from the 5 Boroughs of New York

The hurricane couldn't take it down but rumor has it developers will.

You may have seen it as a background for ads, movies, and music videos. You need permission for commercial use.

To get there, take the 7 train to Courthouse Square.

The official web site is: http://5ptz.com

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Mother Nature always wins.

Graffiti inspired by Alexander Calder

At least that's how I see  it.

If you ever have the opportunity to see his work definitely go. For those who are unfamiliar with his work, Google him.

Last photo before calling it a day. I don't have a title. I just like it.
